Drinking green tea was not associated with reduced risk of breast cancer in Japanese women

Previous study results on green tea and breast cancer risk have been contradictory. A recent, prospective study in Japan followed 53,793 healthy Japanese women in 11 municipal public health centers. Women filled out questionnaires about how often they drank green tea. Thirteen years after the baseline survey, 581 women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The researchers found no significant difference in the risk of breast cancer between those who drank less than one cup of green tea per week and those who drank more than five cups per day or more than ten cups per day. They found no association regardless of hormone receptor-defined subtype or menopausal status.
